The Haul: A Little Bit Of MAC

I'm basically physically incapable of resisting a trip to MAC. I mean, no. I can't pass it up. 

So whenever someone asks if I'm up for a quickie to the closest store, I try to play it cool while I mentally fist-pump and get ready to pull out my wallet. Because one does not simply walk into MAC without buying anything. That would be plain rude. The day this haul happened I walked in with a couple of purchases in mind and, as it always happens, I marched out with four other things in my shopping bag. Bless.

I'm on the market for a liquid concealer to include in my pro kit and a couple of fellow makeup artists have recommended the MAC Mineralize Concealer (£16.50). This concealer in nice and light on the skin, with buildable coverage and a radiant finish that looks luminous and natural without actually highlighting imperfections. The formula is quite moisturizing and slightly filling, which means it works well on dry skins and mature ones as well. Also it looks like the shade range may run slightly lighter than usual, which is good for very fair complexions as sometimes NC15 is still a bit too dark. I'm still testing it out but so far I really like it.

Weirdly enough I didn't ended up buying any powder eyeshadow this time but I made up for it by picking up 3 of the newest MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots (£15). These are permanent so there was no hurry, however once I swatched them I couldn't simply leave them alone. I was already a fan of the basic ones but I really like this improved version and the color range is oh so pretty. I picked up Camel Coat, which I'd describe as a trench coat kind of shade rather than camel; anyways, it's a nice creamy beige, perfect to give definition to fair complexions, to neutralize any pigmentation on the lid or just as a base, for subtle smokey looks. Stormy Pink is a creamy mauve with a bit of a mushroom undertone, if that even makes sense. It's a very sophisticated shade and I can see it work wonderfully on its own or paired with plums and purples. At last, I grabbed Perky on a whim. I don't usually wear corals on my eyelids but there's something about this shade I can't quite put my finger on. It's just really pretty, I guess, especially if you like an effortless, bonne mine look like I do now and then. I dare to say it could even work as a blush but don't quote me on that.

I spoke about the MAC RiRi Hearts Powder Blush in Bad Girl Gone Good (£20) in my latest wishlist post and as you can tell I caved in and bought it. I'm so glad I did of course, it's just as pretty as I expected and then some. The packaging is the tackiest thing but the blush itself is worth a little cringing: it's a lovely coppery peach that gives the most amazing lit-from-within glow to my pale skin. It's limited edition and is selling out fast, even if not as fast as the rest of the collection, so there's still chance for you to find it somewhere.

Lastly, I back-2-MACed - don't you just love getting free lipsticks? I most certainly do - 6 empties for a lipstick I've had in my wishlist for the longest time. MAC Plumful (£15) is a medium pink with plum undertones, which gives that I-just-ate-a-handful-of-berries kind of look. Although the finish is sheer, it gives plenty of colour to the lips; the wear time is decent given the moisturizing formula and it fades evenly throughout the day. Plumful is a safe way to approach the berry lips trend without going too overboard but it's also a very pretty shade for any occasion and I think it would suit many skin tones.

In pratica sono fisicamente incapace di dire no ad una visita a MAC. No, sul serio. Non ci riesco.

Quindi ogni volta che qualcuno suggerisce di fare una capatina nello store più vicino cerco di mantenere il contegno mentre internamente esulto e mi preparo a tirare fuori il portafoglio. Perchè non si può andare da MAC e non comprare niente. Sarebbe francamente scortese. Quando ho fatto questi acquisti avevo in mente giusto un paio di cose da comprare - incluse le spugnette di lattice che non ho fotografato perchè, diciamocelo, chissene frega delle spugnette di lattice - ma come sempre succede sono uscita dal negozio con altre 4 cose nella busta. E che ci volete fare.

Sono alla ricerca di un correttore liquido per il kit ed un paio di colleghe makeup artist mi hanno consigliato il MAC Mineralize Concealer (€21.17). La texture di questo correttore è super leggera, con coprenza discreta e facile da intensificare, soprattutto grazie al finish luminoso che dona un aspetto molto naturale. La formula è idratante e leggermente riempitiva, ed è quindi perfetta sia per le pelli secche sia per quelle mature. Tra l'altro mi sembra che il range di tonalità sia più chiaro di quello standard dei correttori MAC, gran cosa per chi di solito deve mischiare due colori o per chi è più chiaro del NC15. Lo sto ancora testando ma per il momento mi piace parecchio.

Strano ma vero, questa volta non ho comprato ombretti in polvere ma mi sono rifatta acquistando 3 dei nuovi MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots (€19.66). Sono permanenti, per cui non c'era fretta, ma dopo averli swatchati non ho saputo resistere. Ero già una fan dei Paint Pot normali ma mi piace questa nuova versione ed era ora che la gamma di colori fosse aggiornata. Ho preso Camel Coat, che più che un cappotto di cammello mi ricorda un trench; è un beige chiaro, perfetto per dare definizione alle pelli chiare, per coprire eventuali discromie della palpebra e da usare come base per look tono su tono. Stormy Pink è un malva cremoso con un sottotono grigio talpa. E' un colore davvero sofisticato, perfetto per questa stagione e lo vedo bene da solo ed accompagnato ad ombretti viola e prugna. Infine, un po' d'impulso, ho preso anche Perky. Di solito non indosso coralli sulla palpebra ma c'è un certo non so che in questo colore che me l'ha fatto amare subito. E' il colore perfetto per chi come me ama i look bonne mine, freschi e naturali. Oserei dire che si potrebbe usare anche come blush ma non ci metto la mano sul fuoco.

Ho già parlato del MAC RiRi Hearts Powder Blush in Bad Girl Gone Good (€25.21) nel mio ultimo post wishlist e naturalmente sono corsa a comprarlo prima che sparisse dagli scaffali. E' persino più bello di quanto mi aspettassi, nonostante in cialda dica ben poco. Il packaging è tremendo ma il prodotto vale un po' di ribrezzo: è un pesca ramato che dona alle guance una lumonosità incredibile, di quelle che sembrano venire da dentro. E' un'edizione limitata per cui se volete dargli un'occhiata vi conviene affrettarvi.

Infine ho fatto back-2-MAC - non è magnifico portarsi a casa un rossetto gratis? -, scambiando 6 vuoti per un rossetto che è stato in wishlist per tantissimo tempo. MAC Plumful (€18.65) è un rosa medio con sottotoni prugna, il colore delle labbra dopo aver mangiato una manciata di more. Anche se il finish è semi-trasparente, il colore è intenso; la durata non è eccelsa - e d'altronde da una formula così lucida ed idratante non ci si aspetta molto in questo senso -, ma svanisce in modo uniforme. Plumful potrebbe essere il colore giusto per avvicinarsi al trend delle labbra color bacca senza esporsi troppo, ma è anche una tonalità deliziosa per tutti i giorni ed adatta a diversi incarnati.

The Event: A Makeover With Laura Mercier

Being oh so picky when it comes down to my skin and makeup, cosmetics counter makeovers aren't something I indulge in too often. However a few days ago I put my face in the hands of the lovely Sara at the Laura Mercier counter and I've enjoyed the experience so much I thought I'd share.

Sara began by removing my makeup and cleansing the skin with the Oil-free One Step Foaming Cleanser (£29), a delicate yet effective foam that gets rid of any makeup residue in just one swipe. She then applied a thin layer of Multi-Vitamin Serum (£60) for an instant brightening effect, then a bit of Tone Perfecting Creme (£77) to moisturize and even out any redness. Finally she applied one of my favourite products, the Foundation Primer Radiance (£28), to prep the skin for foundation, blur imperfections and add a boost of luminosity to my dry skin.

Moving onto makeup, Sara asked me a little about my Laura Mercier favourites and decided to use the Oil Free Supreme Foundation (£33), a medium coverage long-lasting base I got sampled quite a while ago but never got around buying. This base is extremely light and comfortable to wear, and not-at-all drying despite the oil-free formula. She got the most out of the coverage applying it with a dry sponge and pressing it into my skin for a flawless finish. To hide a few stubborn scars and blemishes she picked up one of her cult products, the Undercover Pot (£29), the ultimate travel-friendly product. Inside the compact, a tiny mirror, a concealer duo and a decent amount of translucent loose powder to set the look. The Secret Camouflage side was used to make any imperfection disappear, while the Secret Concealer side got rid of my under-eye shadows. Only a small amount was needed as this stuff is incredibly pigmented. Finally she set everything with a light dust of Universal Loose Powder (£29) and Secret Brightening Powder (£18.50), two of my all time favourite products. The Universal Loose Powder is a makeup artist favourite to set the base as it works well across all skin tones and types, while Secret Brightening stops the concealer from setting into fine lines and moving around, and brightens the under eye area as well. She also used a light swipe of a matte bronzer to bring back dimension to the face and a ginger blush to define the cheekbones without going too overboard.

Next up, Sara moved onto my brows, filling them with an angled brush dipped into the Brow Definer (£16.50) in Fair, perfect to fill in any gaps in an uber natural way. For the eyes she created a classical v-shaped smokey eye but with an interesting twist. I usually stay clear of blacks and dark greys in the crease as I feel they can make my eyes look smaller and deeper set, however Sara managed to define them and make them appear even bigger thanks to a clever product placement. Caviar Stick Eye Colour (£20.50) in Grey Pearl was used as a base, to create a smooth surface for the eyeshadow to stick to conceal any pigmentation on the lid. After blending a matte dark grey-ish brown in a 3 shape to define, Sara drew the skinniest line with one of the new Creme Eye Liners (£18.50). Noir is one of the blackest blacks I've seen in a while and the smooth, creamy texture allows for an extremely easy and fool proof application.
A quick coat of mascara on top and bottom lashes and we were finally ready for the lips. I was really excited to try one of the new Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lips (£20) which struck me immediately for the soft texture and incredible pigmentation. Sara chose Mod 103, a gorgeous warm red with opaque finish. Now that is the most comfortable matte formula I've ever tried and I'll be definitely going back for more once I've sorted out my lipstick collection to see which shades I'm missing.
At last, a tiny blob of Secret Finish (£23.50) made the base last all day without need for touch-ups.

The final look was something different from what I'm used to but flattering and easy to wear nonetheless.
A couple of purchases may have happened and a few brilliant products may have sneaked into my wishlist as well, including two of the amazing brushes of the range. Yes, you heard me. There's no such a thing as too many brushes.

Difficile come sono quando si parla di cura della pelle e trucco, posso contare sulle dita di una mano le volte in cui mi sono concessa un makeover. Qualche giorno fa però ho affidato il mio viso alla gentilissima Sara del counter Laura Mercier alLa Rinascente e l'esperienza mi è piaciuta tanto che ho pensato di condividerla con voi.

Sara ha iniziato rimuovendo il makeup che già indossavo e pulendo la pelle con l'Oil-free One Step Foaming Cleanser (€37), una schiuma delicata ma molto efficace che rimuove il trucco non waterproof in una sola passata. Dopodichè si è dedicata alla preparazione della base con il siero bifasico Multi-Vitamin Serum (€74) per illuminare l'incarnato, seguito da uno strato leggero di Tone Perfecting Creme (€100), per idratare e contrastare i rossori. Infine, ha applicato sul mio viso uno dei miei prodotti preferiti, il Foundation Primer Radiance (€35), per facilitare stesura e durata del fondotinta, ridurre l'apparenza di pori ed imperfezioni e contrastare il colorito spento.

Prima di cominciare con il makeup vero e proprio, Sara mi ha fatto alcune domande per capire quali fossero i prodotti che già utilizzavo e cosa volessi provare. Per me ha scelto l'Oil Free Supreme Foundation (€44), un fondotinta a media coprenza ed a lunga durata, che avevo già provato un po' di tempo fa ma che non avevo mai acquistato perchè rapita da un altro fondo del marchio. Questa base è estremamente leggera e confortevole da indossare, e, nonostante la formula oil free, per niente secca. Per ottenere la coprenza massima offerta dal prodotto, lo ha picchiettato sulla pelle con una spugnetta asciutta ottenendo un incarnato perfetto. Per coprire un paio di brufoletti e cicatrici testarde ha scelto uno dei suoi preferiti e prodotto cult del marchio, l'Undercover Pot (€36), il non plus ultra dei prodotti compatti. Il piccolo compact nasconde uno specchietto, un duo di correttori ed una discreta quantità di polvere libera per fissare il tutto. Il correttore Secret Camouflage nasconde le imperfezioni in un battito di ciglia, mentre il Secret Concealer ha coperto occhiaie ed iperpigmentazione. Sono entrambi così pigmentati che una minuscola quantità è più che sufficiente per coprire ogni tipo di imperfezione. Per fissare il tutto, Sara ha steso un velo di Universal Loose Powder (€38) e Secret Brightening Powder (€25), due dei miei prodotti preferiti di tutti i tempi. La Universal Loose Powder è la preferita di molti makeup artist, perchè offre ottimi risultati su diversi incarnati e con diversi tipi di pelle, mentre la Secret Brightening fissa il correttore impedendogli di muoversi ed accumularsi nelle rughette di espressione, ed illumina la zona occhiaie allo stesso tempo. Una passata leggera di bronzer matte per ridare dimensione al viso ed un blush naturale per scolpire gli zigomi hanno aggiunto il tocco finale alla base.

Poi Sara è passata a riempire le sopracciglia, con un pennellino angolato intinto nel Brow Definer (€22) in Fair, perfetto per disegnare ed infoltire in modo molto naturale. Per gli occhi ha creato un trucco smokey dalla classica forma a v ma con una variazione interessante. Di norma tendo a scegliere texture luminose ed a stare alla larga da neri e colori molto scuri nella piega per non rimpicciolire ed infossare lo sguardo, ma Sara è riuscita a definire ed ingrandire l'occhio grazie ad un'abile applicazione dei vari prodotti. Il Caviar Stick Eye Colour (€25) in Grey Pearl è stato applicato come base, per creare una superficie omogenea a cui l'ombretto potesse aderire perfettamente e per uniformare il colorito della palbebra. Dopo aver sfumato un marrone grigio opaco in una forma a 3 per definire l'occhio, Sara ha disegnato una linea sottilissima di eyeliner con uno dei nuovi Creme Eye Liners (€22). Noir è uno dei neri più neri che abbia visto ultimamente e la texture soffice e cremosa permette un'applicazione veloce ed a prova d'imbranato.
Una passata veloce di mascara sulle ciglia superiori ed inferiori ed ero pronta per il rossetto. Non vedevo l'ora di provare uno dei nuovi Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lips (€23) che mi hanno subito colpita per l'incredibile pigmentazione e la texture morbidissima. Sara ha scelto Mod 103, un favoloso rosso caldo dal finish opaco. Questa è sul serio la formula matte più confortevole che abbia mai provato e molti di questi rossetti torneranno a casa con me non appena avrò sistemato la mia collezione, per vedere cosa mi manca.
Ultimo ma non meno importante, una goccia di Secret Finish (€30) picchiettata sul viso ha fatto sì che la base durasse fino a sera senza bisogno di ritocchi.

Il look finale è diverso da quelli che sono abituata ad indossare ma mi è comunque piaciuto moltissimo e mi sono sentita a mio agio nel portarlo.
Potrei aver fatto un paio di acquisti ed alcuni favolosi prodotti potrebbero essere entrati in wishlist, inclusi un paio di pennelli. Si, pennelli. Quelli non bastano mai.

The Makeup Bag Autumn Update

This week I felt a strong need to switch my routine and adjust it to the season. I dived deep into my drawers and pulled out a few key products that will make me feel autumn-ready in no time.

As the weather gets colder I like to switch foundations and upgrade to higher coverage compared to the tinted moisturizers and light textures I reach for during the summer months. I still enjoy dewy and glowy finishes but lately I've been going down a different road entirely, simply because I'm having a hard time finding a foundation that matches my skin tone at the moment. MAC Matchmaster foundation (£27) in 1.0 is pretty much the perfect match for me but still requires a lot of skin prep to look good on my dry skin due to the oil free formula and the virtually matte finish. The medium coverage is perfect for this time of the year tho, when a bit of redness start creeping through my skin, and the formula is really long lasting, so I don't mind the layers of Laura Mercier Radiance Primer and MAC Fix+ I have to apply to make it suitable for me too much. I'm already looking for something more appropriate for my skin type of course but for now I'm making do.

You know how easily obsessed I am with beauty products and as of late it's been all about concealers. My most recent addiction is the Origins Plantscription Anti-aging Concealer (£17), which has quickly become one of my everyday staples. The uber moisturizing formula is crease proof and long lasting so there's no need to set it with powder and the instant wide-awake effect is simply brilliant. I love me some treatment makeup and this concealer is like a 10 hour beauty nap in a tube.

Onto the eye stuff, only a few days ago I got my hands on the Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint For Eyes (£17)* in 09 Lavish Lilac and I've been using it loads ever since. I don't stray from my signature gold and bronze hues too easily but there's something about this mellow metallic plum that really stole my heart. It's so easy to apply and blend at the edges for a quick smokey look and lasts all day without budging. Now I see why everyone can't stop talking about these cream shadows. For a powder option I put together this duo with one of my favourite MAC Eyeshadows (£10), Patina, and one of the most neglected shades in my collection, Trax - a green-ish taupe shot through with pale gold sheen and pink-ish plum with shimmer respectively -. I love how these two shades blend into one another in a sultry yet sophisticated mix. I wear Patina all over the lid and then blend Trax in the crease and outer v, with a mix of both shades on the lower lash line for the perfect grungy smokey look.

The berry theme continues with NARS Sin Blush (£21.50), a frosted plum with gold shimmer running through it. I absolutely adore this shade and I always get back to it, cause it complements my complexion so well. It works nicely across many skin tones and gives a beautiful lit-from-within, healthy glow. It seems people tend to ignore it in favor of other more famous shades, probably because it looks a bit dark in the pan, but it's a real stunner and a great cheek color for fall and winter. Very similar to another popular NARS shade - Dolce Vita - is the Bourjois Cream Blush in 04 Sweet Cherry (£7.99), perfect for a gorgeous I-took-a-walk-in-the-snow kind of flush. I promise I'll stop talking about these blushes at some point but right now I can't put them down. Sweet Cherry is a red pink with an opaque finish, so easy to pat on the cheeks and go.

Lastly, even if my go-to shades for the cooler months are dark reds and deep berries, sometimes I still feel the need for something more subtle, especially if I'm wearing a smokey eye. MAC Lipstick in Syrup (£15) is a darker version of my lip shade, a medium pink with just a hint of plum. I picked it on a whim, after the worst of days, but it turns out my frustration has good taste for lip products after all. Like other Lustre lipsticks, it's glossy and moisturizing - such a relief for my dry lips - but lasts quite a long time on me and the color pay-off is nice and buildable.

Questa settimana ho sentito il bisogno di cambiare la mia routine ed adattarla meglio alla stagione in corso. Mi sono tuffata nei miei cassetti e ne sono riemersa con alcuni prodotti chiave che hanno portato l'autunno nella mia trousse.

Quando le temperature cominciano a calare mi piace cambiare fondotinta e spostarmi verso coprenze più alte, rispetto alle creme colorate e consistenze ultra leggere che preferisco in estate. La scelta cade sempre su prodotti luminosi, ma ultimamente mi sono mossa nella direzione opposta, più che altro perchè sto facendo fatica a trovare un fondotinta che si adatti perfettamente al mio colorito attuale. MAC Matchmaster foundation (€35.79) in 1.0 è l'unico che risponda ai requisiti per il momento ma richiede un bel po' di lavoro per avere un aspetto decente sulla mia pelle secca, a causa della formula oil free ed il finish praticamente opaco. La coprenza media è ottima per questa periodo in cui cominciano a trasparire i primi rossori , e la durata è incredibile, per cui gli strati di Primer Radiance di Laura Mercier e di MAC Fix+ che devo applicare non mi disturbano più di tanto. Sono comunque alla ricerca di qualcosa di più appropriato al mio tipo di pelle ma per il momento mi arrangio.

Sapete quanto facilmente mi ossessioni ad un prodotto ed al momento vado matta per i correttori. Il mio acquisto più recente è l'Origins Plantscription Anti-aging Concealer (€20), che è diventato dopo pochi utilizzi un punto fisso della mia routine quotidiana. La formula extra idratante è a prova di rughette e segni d'espressione e a lunga durata, per cui non servono polveri per fissarla, e l'azione illuminante è una meraviglia.
Adoro il makeup/trattamento e questo correttore è come 10 ore di sonno di bellezza in tubetto. 

 

Per quanto riguarda il trucco occhi, ho messo le mani sul Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint For Eyes (€17.50)* in 09 Lavish Lilac solo qualche giorno fa, ma da quel momento l'ho indossato in continuazione. Non capita spesso che mi allontani dal mio tipico trucco oro e bronzo, ma c'è qualcosa in questo viola chiaro metallizzato che mi ha davvero rubato il cuore. E' così facile da applicare e sfumare lungo i bordi per uno smokey velocissimo e non si muove di un millimetro per tutto il giorno. Ora capisco perchè non si parla d'altro nella beauty community.
Per un'opzione in polvere, invece, ho messo insieme questo duo con uno dei miei MAC Eyeshadows (€13.61) preferiti, Patina, ed uno degli ombretti che, con mio gran rammarico, ho trascurato di più ultimamente, Trax - rispettivamente un talpa verdognolo con iridescenza dorata ed un prugna rosato con glitter color oro -. Amo come questi due colori apparentemente così diversi si mescolino a meraviglia in un mix morbido e sofisticato. Indosso Patina sulla palpebra mobile e Trax nella piega e nella v esterna, con un mix dei due sfumato lungo la palpebra inferiore per un look un po' grungy.

Il tema cromatico continua con NARS Sin Blush (€26.25), un prugna iridescente pieno di piccoli glitter dorati. Adoro sul serio questa tonalità e torno sempre ad utilizzarla, perchè si adatta perfettamente alla mia carnagione. Si accompagna bene anche a diversi altri incarnati e dona una favolosa luminosità che sembra scaturire dalla pelle stessa. Vedo che molti ignorano Sin in favore di blush più brillanti, che tendono a catturare l'attenzione più facilmente - in effetti sembra un po' triste nella cialda - ma toglie il fiato ed è perfetto per questa stagione. Molto simile ad un altro dei colori NARS più popolari - Dolce Vita - è Bourjois Cream Blush in 04 Sweet Cherry (€10.77), perfetto per ricreare guance arrossate da una passeggiata nella neve. Prometto che prima o poi smetterò di cantare le lodi di questi blush, ma per il momento non riesco a metterli via. Sweet Cherry è un rosa rosso con un finish opaco, semplicissimo da picchiettare velocemente sulle guance ed uscire.

 

Infine, anche se la mia scelta per i mesi più freddi ricade spessissimo su rossi scuri e bacca decisi, a volte sento il bisogno di tonalità più delicate, specialmente se per gli occhi ho scelto uno smokey eye. MAC Lipstick in Syrup (€18.65) è una versione più scura del colore delle mie labbra, un rosa medio con giusto una punta di prugna. L'ho comprato un po' d'impulso, dopo una giornata da dimenticare, ma a quanto pare la mia frustrazione ha un ottimo gusto per il makeup. Come altri rossetti dal finish Lustre, è lucido ed idratante - un sollievo per le mie labbra secche -, ma dura abbastanza a lungo e la coprenza è facilmente modulabile.
