MAC prep + prime skin refined zone

You know that feeling, when you want to like something and try really hard to love it but it just doesn’t work?
When this product first came out I was really excited: I was still in the middle of my MAC crush – when I wanted to try and own everything – and, even if I don’t have issues with my pores, I was intrigued by the idea.

It promises to refine skin texture and reduce the appearance of pores while mattifying and fighting oils and shine. It's a thin gel consistency that you dab on the problematic areas and let set for a couple of minutes before going on with the rest of your makeup routine.
The idea itself is brilliant and it works just fine, however this guy here doesn’t like foundation at all.

I purchased this almost a couple of years ago I think, and I’ve used it randomly ever since. The only foundation that seems to work with this primer – meaning that it doesn’t turn into a complete mess, but still doesn’t look at his best – is the MAC Face & body foundation; all the other foundations I own look fine for 20-30 minutes then start looking uneven and cakey, even blotchy sometimes.

It’s a shame because pores look smaller indeed and the T zone is completely mattified, but a primer that doesn’t work with any foundation - be it cream, liquid or powder – it’s completely pointless.
Fortunately is on his last leg and will be Back2MAC-ed soon enough, but I definitely give up trying to like it and make it work.

Avete presente la sensazione che si prova quando un prodotto che volete tanto apprezzare, vi delude tragicamente?
Quando ho scoperto dell’esistenza di questo prodotto mi è subito venuta voglia di provarlo: ero ancora nel pieno della mia fase MAC – in cui volevo testare ed acquistare tutto – e, anche se non ho problemi con i miei pori, l’idea m’intrigava.

Promette di raffinare la texture dell’incarnato e ridurre l’aspetto dei pori, opacizzando e constrastando oli e lucidità. Si tratta di un gel leggero che va picchiettato sulle aree problematiche e lasciato asciugare per un paio di minuti prima di procedere con la base.
L’idea in sé è geniale e in realtà il prodotto funziona, ma solo quando utilizzato da solo, visto che non va d’accordo con i fondotinta in generale. L’ho acquistato quasi un paio di anni fa, credo, e da allora l’ho utilizzato a singhiozzo cercando di farlo funzionare. L’unico fondotinta che non interagisce tragicamente con questo primer – ovvero non si decompone nel giro di una manciata di minuti ma resiste qualche ora – è il Face & body di MAC; tutti le altri basi resistono per 20-30 minuti, per poi perdere di uniformità e compattezza nelle aree in cui sono sovrapposte al primer e apparire cakey – l’effetto che si ottiene applicando troppo prodotto – ed a chiazze.

E’ un peccato perché il prodotto da solo funziona egregiamente: i pori sono ridotti e la zona T è perfettamente opacizzata, ma un primer inefficace quando combinato ad un fondotinta è completamente inutile.
Fortunatamente è agli sgoccioli e lo utilizzerò per un Back2MAC al più presto, ma rinuncio uffcialmente a provare a farlo funzionare.

A noi ragazze i prodotti di bellezza piacciono, c’è poco da dire, e se sono gratis, o quasi, ancora meglio.
Dopo giorni di brutto tempo, oggi ho approfittato del primo raggio di sole e colto l’occasione al volo per una passeggiata, un po’ di shopping e, armata di coupons, una veloce spedizione di raccolta omaggi.
Vi presento il bottino:

 

Prima di tutto Sephora, visto che in tante abbiamo ricevuto il coupon. L’offerta è riservata alle titolari di Gold card – le spendaccione, insomma -; tramite il coupon, ricevuto per posta, dal 16 aprile al 20 maggio è possibile sfruttare due promozioni, anche in tempi diversi: uno sconto del 15% sull’acquisto di almeno 2 prodotti e, meraviglia delle meraviglie, uno smalto OPI full size su visita in store – quindi senza obbligo di acquisto -.
E’ possibile scegliere tra 4 tonalità: Passion– il tipico rosa nudo chic, non particolarmente coprente -, Lincoln park after dark – uno dei miei preferiti e dei più popolari, un prugna scurissimo, quasi nero -, Malaga wine – un rosso profondo, color vino – e Big apple red – un rosso brillante, color camion dei pompieri. Possedendo già Lincoln park, la scelta è ricaduta su Big apple red, visto che non ho niente del genere nella mia collezione e le review che ho trovato online erano entusiastiche. Visto il ritardo nel sfruttare l’offerta, quasi temevo di non trovare più niente, ma tutte e quattro le tonalità erano ancora disponibili.
Lo smalto è full size, del valore di 13,90€. E conosco il prezzo perché OPI è ora in vendita anche da Sephora, ad un prezzo fantastico aggiungerei, visto che online ed alLa Rinascente costano 15.00€ - i set di 4 smalti mini costano 20€ -. Per ora li ho visti in centro a Milano; magari per la provincia ed il sito ci vorrà un po’, ma finalmente l’Italia si sta adeguando agli altri paesi più cosmeticamente avanzati.

Per quanto riguarda i prodotti L’Occitane, si tratta di deluxe samples che normalmente si ricevono a seguito di acquisti importanti, ma che ho potuto ritirare grazie ad un coupon, anch’esso ricevuto via posta. Visto che la promozione prevedeva un qualunque acquisto, ho comprato una delle cose più economiche in negozio – uno strepitoso sacchetto profuma biancheria alla lavanda, la mia linea preferita de L’occitane – ed ho ritirato i miei omaggi per un valore complessivo di 8.50€ -: una mini crema mani ed una piedi da 10ml della linea karitè, ed una bottiglietta da 35ml del nuovo olio doccia alla mandorla. Viste le review più che positive che mi era capitato di leggere online, sono stata contentissima di ricevere l’olio. L’offerta,  per chi ha ricevuto il coupon, è valida entro il mese di ricezione dello stesso; farà fede il timbro postale.
Non vedo l’ora di provare tutto.

Us Girls, we love makeup and beauty products, we know that, but if they’re free we love them even more. After a whole week of pouring rain I took advantage of the first glimpse of sun to take a walk, do a little shopping and, armed with my precious coupons, go fetch my freebies.

Finally Sephora Italy stocks OPI nail polishes, and to celebrate offered a free full size bottle to the VIP clients. The choice is between Passion – a simple and chic nude pink -, Lincoln park after dark– one of the most popular shades and one of my favorites, a super dark wine, almost black -, Malaga wine – a deep berry red – and Big apple red – fire truck red -. As you can see, thanks to the positive reviews and a missing dupe in my collection, my choice fell on Big red apple.

I love L’occitane but I find it quite expensive, so I try to buy only during the sales or when I’m out of my beloved lavender hand cream. I was so glad to receive a coupon to receive two mini 10ml hand cream and foot cream with karitè butter and a 35ml sample of the new Almond shower oil with a little purchase – I bought a lovely lavender parfumed sachet, one of the cheapest items in store -. Can’t wait to try out everything.

April MyBeautyBox - first impressions

Nel tentativo di rimediare ai tumulti scatenati dalla prima box di Marzo, il team MyBeautyBox ha deciso di inviare la box di Aprile a tutte le abbonate alla prima box, a titolo gratuito ed indipendentemente dal fatto che fossero rimaste iscritte al servizio o avessero annullato l’abbonamento. Ad essere onesti, avendo richiesto il rimborso, non mi aspettavo di ricevere la box, ma questa mattina, puntuale come un orologio, è arrivato il fedele corriere Bartolini.

Ecco il contenuto della box di Aprile:

WELEDA Crema fluida alla Rosa mosqueta – una crema per il corpo leggera ad assorbimento rapido dalla profumazione piuttosto pungente, per rassodare. 2x20ml
WELEDA Trattamento idratante levigante alla Rosa mosqueta – attenua le prime rughe e rende la pelle morbida e luminosa. La profumazione è sempre abbastanza pungente, ma risulta più attenuata. 2x7ml
WELEDA Latte & tonico 2 in 1 rinfrescante – con olio d’oliva, olio di limone per un effetto astringente e hamamelis, per tonificare e preparare la pelle ai trattamenti successivi. 2x10ml
WELEDA Siero rassodante al melograno – per contrastare i radicali liberi ed idratare in profondità. La profumazione mi ricorda vagamente una pomata. 2x7ml
WELEDA Doccia cremosa al melograno – crema doccia delicata che mantiene l’equilibrio idro-lipidico della pelle per impedire disidratazione ed ammorbidire. 2x20ml

Come vedete si tratta di una box monomarca, come era già successo con la prima scatola, interamente dedicata a Leighton Denny. Deduco quindi che le prime voci fossero vere e che tutte le box saranno tematiche in questo senso: non tanto per tipologia – solo unghie, solo capelli, solo makeup – ma per brand.
E’ una cosa che può piacere oppure no: per quanto mi riguarda trovo sia già abbastanza difficile trovare qualcosa di proprio gradimento in una box con 5 prodotti di brand differenti, per cui una box monomarca può essere ancora più rischiosa in termini di gradimento. Per esempio, in questo caso le profumazioni sono molto forti e pungenti – quella della linea melograno mi ricorda tantissimo l’odore del Voltaren gel – ed io che non amo particolarmente le profumazioni naturali ed erbose, tipiche dei prodotti bio, non mi sento molto ispirata ad utilizzare i sample. Certo, vale anche il contrario: magari le appassionate di prodotti bionaturali staranno facendo salti di gioia in questo momento.

Alcuni dei sample sono più generosi del solito – tutte taglie da viaggio comprese tra i 7ml e i 20ml – ed eccezionalmente ci vengono presentate in doppia dose, quindi ce n’è abbastanza per una prova coi fiocchi.
Degno di nota il fatto che tutti i prodotti selezionati siano adatti a tutti i tipi di pelle – la linea alla rosa selvatica è specifica per le pelli normali e miste, quindi dovrebbe adattarsi anche alle pelli non eccessivamente secche -; in passato, con la box concorrente, abbiamo assistito all’inserimento di prodotti alle volte troppo specifici, come trattamenti per rimediare alle rughe indipendentemente dall’età dell’abbonata, quindi apprezzo l’attenzione.

Per concludere, sembrerebbe una buona box, ma non essendo il mio genere di prodotti non me la sento di sbilanciarmi. Al di là della delusione per la box precedente ed il comportamento dell’azienda – che mi hanno irrimediabilmente indisposta verso il servizio -, non credo che si tratti del servizio più adatto ai miei bisogni. Se le box fossero tematiche nell’altro senso, ovvero se fossero specifiche per tipologia di prodotti e la variante fosse rappresentata dai marchi potrei farci un pensierino, ma così com’è il servizio è troppo a scatola chiusa, se capite cosa intendo: la box potrebbe contenere davvero qualunque cosa – mentre nella rivale le tipologie di prodotti inserite sono sempre più o meno fisse - e potrei non trovare nulla di mio gradimento. Inoltre, idealmente mi piacerebbe ricevere una box di solo makeup, perché ho già trovato le mie routine per la cura della pelle e dei capelli e me le tengo ben strette. La mia avventura con MyBB termina qui.

Sleek Blush by 3 in Pumpkin review & swatches

As I said in the previous post, the Lace palette was the first one to catch my attention but I think I may like Pumpkin better. It’s the perfect Spring/summer palette and I feel the colors diverge from the usual combinations, the shade mishmash a little more unusual.

With this combo you get Lantern – is a red orange with gold shimmer -, Squash – a slightly warm-toned bright pink - and P pie – a matte orange -. While P pie is definitely opaque, Squash has a gorgeous satin finish and Lantern has a soft shimmer but is not as metallic as Guipure from the Lace palette. They are all very pigmented but Squash coloring is almost insane.

As for Lace, a couple of shades remind of previously releases: Squash is similar to Flamingo from the permanent collection, while P pie is quite close to Aruba from the limited edition Caribbean collection. Lantern is an original shade.

Texture wise, P pie is perfect, soft and smooth. Squash can be a little powdery especially if you press your finger or your brush into the powder a little too enthusiastically. Lantern is still very soft but it looks and feels a little crumbly at the touch; anyways it blends seamlessly on the skin like the others, without fall outs.

These 3 shades also remind me of the mineralize blushes that came out in February with the Naturally collection by MAC: the shades are quite similar, even if P pie is less yellow toned than Fresh honey and is therefore more wearable for fair skin tones.

The packaging is the usual smooth black compact with a decent size mirror. Each blush is 6.5g more or less. Permanent single blushes are 8g each and retail for 7€/5£ apiece. Once again a bargain, with very good quality for value.

Which one do you prefer, Lace or Pumpkin?

Come dicevo nella precedente review, Lace è il blush trio che per primo ha attirato la mia attenzione, ma credo che Pumpkin possa piacermi ancora di più. E’ la palette perfetta per la Primavera/Estate ed i colori divergono dalle tipiche combinazioni, il mix più diverso dal solito.

Di questo trio fanno parte Lantern – un rosso-arancio con iridescenza dorata -, Squash – un rosa brillante con sottotoni caldi - e P pie – un arancio opaco -. Mentre P pie è decisamente matte, Squash ha un grazioso finish satinato e in Lantern troviamo una luminosità perlata più che l’effetto metallico visto con Guipure della palette Lace. Sono tutti estremamente pigmentati, ma la scrivenza di Squash è quasi incredibile.

Come accadeva con il trio di Lace, due tonalità ricordano blush già visti in precedenza: Squash somiglia a Flamingo della collezione permanente, mentre P pie si avvicina ad Aruba, parte della collezione ad edizione limitata Caribbean. Lantern è inedito.

Parlando della texture, P pie è perfetto, la polvere morbida e liscia. Squash si rivela un po’ polveroso, specialmente quando si premono il dito oppure il pennello sulla polvere con un po’ troppo entusiasmo. Lantern è sì morbido, ma sembra quasi friabile al tatto, anche se durante l’applicazione si sfuma bene quanto gli altri, senza fall outs.

Queste 3 tonalità mi ricordano tra l’altro i blush minerali della collezione Naturally di MAC uscita a Febbraio: i colori sono piuttosto simili, anche se P pie è meno giallo di Fresh honey e di conseguenza più adatto alle pelli più chiare.

Per quanto riguarda il packaging si tratta del solito compact di platica nera, leggermente satinata, con uno specchio di dimensioni decenti. Ogni cialda contiene più o meno 6.5g. I blush singoli della collezione permanente contengono 8g di polvere ciascuno e costano 7€ al pezzo. Di nuovo un vero affare, con un ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo.

Le palette Blush by 3 sono limited edition, costano 13€ e potete acquistarle online sul sito Sleekmakeup.com. Come menzionavo in precedenza, al momento l’unica opzione disponibile è la spedizione non tracciata al costo di 9€ che ci mette più o meno una settimana. Speriamo che Sleek renda di nuovo disponibile l’opzione tracciabile con consegna tramite corriere al costo di 12€, non tanto per la rapidità di consegna ma per la certezza di ricevere il proprio ordine.

As every makeup junkie may well confirm, space is a big issue for every beauty product collector and I’m no exception. That’s why when something space-saving – usually money-saving too - like palettes and stacks come out I jump straight into it.

Sleek makeup isn’t new to the beauty community - we all know them for the amazing quality of their eyeshadow palettes and the little prices – and when a brand has to live up to such a reputation it can be hard to put on the market something as successful as the product that made you famous. It would be easier to just sit there and grind out thousand of palettes that at the end of the day all look the same. Instead Sleek created something new, smart and exciting for this spring, and you’ll see why I’m so thrilled.

The Blush by 3 palettes are the latest addition to the Sleek family: 5 blush palettes with 3 original shades each – with a combination of matte and shimmer shades -. Certain shades remind of some limited edition blushes we saw in the past collections, so if you missed out the previous releases this is your chance to grab some amazing colors.
Lace is all about soft pinkish corals; Pink Sprint contains fuchsia and purples; Sugar covers the browns and plums; with Flame you get a neutral, a red and a cranberry shade; Pumpkin is all about warm toned bright colors.

I was tempted to buy them all for my freelance kit – sometimes my job is so convenient – but I’m trying to behave for the sake of my wallet and I picked only two, Lace and Pumpkin.

Lace was the first palette to catch my attention because of the soft, everyday shades. It’s definitely the most wearable for fair girls like me but of course all the shades can be modulated to suit most skin tones.
The three blushes you get with these palettes are Crochet – a muted orange with matte finish -, Guipure – a peachy pink with metallic gold shimmer – and Chantilly – opaque reddish peach -.
Sleek recommends using the matte shades for a subtle day time look and adding the shimmery shade on top for night time allure. The shimmer shade though is pigmented enough to be used on its own and delivers a healty, glowy finish, perfect for the warm season. Also the matte shades are not flat or dull - they actually lean on the satin side -, they look natural and fresh.

As I said before, some shades remind me of previously released blushes: Guipure looks a lot like Rose gold from the permanent line – it’s also pretty close to NARS Orgasm -, while Crochet is similar to the LE blush from the Avoir la peche collection, Pan Tao. As far as I can tell Chantilly is an original shade.

The pigmentation is wonderful as usual and the texture is lovely, soft and easy to blend. The matte shades are a little powdery – try pressing the brush instead of swiping – while the shimmery shade is creamy, the glitters well combined into the powder so that they’re not chunky and don’t sit awkwardly on the skin.

The packaging is sleek – oh marvel! – and basic, but still elegant: a black compact made of sturdy plastic. It comes with a decent size mirror that makes it easy to travel with.
Each palette contains 20g of product – about 6.5g each blush – per 13€/10£ while in the single blushes you get 8g per 7€/5£. You see the Blush by 3 palettes are extremely convenient, since you get three almost-full-size powders for the price of two.
Space-saving and a lot cheaper, it’s a win-win product.

Come tutte le appassionate di makeup confermeranno, lo spazio è uno dei più grandi problemi delle collezioniste di prodotti di bellezza ed io non faccio eccezione. Questo è il motivo per cui ogni volta che un marchio propone prodotti salva-spazio – e di solito anche salva-portafoglio – come palette ed impilabili sono pronta a mettere mano alla fidata carta di credito.

Il marchio Sleek makeup non è nuovo alla beauty community - tutti conosciamo le favolose palette di ombretti ed il loro prezzo contenuto – e quando un brand costruisce la propria reputazione su un prodotto di grande successo, mantenere lo standard può essere difficile. La soluzione più semplice sarebbe quella di vivere di rendita e semplicemente continuare a sfornare palette che alla fine si assomigliano tutte. Invece Sleek ha deciso di creare - pur restando fedele alla nomea di brand di qualità a prezzi contenuti – qualcosa di nuovo, intelligente ed entusiasmante per questa primavera/estate e tra un attimo comprenderete la mia eccitazione.

Le palette Blush by 3 sono l’aggiunta più recente alla famiglia Sleek: 5 palette con 3 tonalità inedite di blush ciascuna – con una combinazione di finish opachi e shimmer -. Alcuni colori ricordano dei blush in edizione limitata presentati nelle collezioni passate, quindi se non siete riuscite ad accaparrarvi alcune di quelle colorazioni, questa è l’occasione giusta.
Lace contiene coralli rosati; la palette Pink Sprint contiene fuchsia e viola; Sugar si compone di marroni e prugna; con Flame si parla di rossi e neutri dai toni caldi; Pumpkin propone colori brillanti dai sottotoni caldi.

Sono stata tentata di acquistarle tutte e cinque per il mio kit da freelancer – alle volte il mio lavoro è proprio conveniente – ma sto cercando di contenermi per il bene del mio portafoglio ed ho scelto Lace e Pumpkin.

Lace è la prima palette che ha attirato la mia attenzione per le tonalità delicate, da tutti i giorni. E’ decisamente quella più sfruttabile dalle ragazze con la pelle molto chiara come me, ma ovviamente tutte le tonalità possono essere modulate per adeguarsi ad ogni carnagione.
I tre blush contenuti in questa palette sono Crochet – un arancio tenue con finish opaco -, Guipure – un rosa pesca con shimmer dorato dall’effetto quasi metallico– e Chantilly – un pesca matte tendente al rosso -.
Sleek raccomanda di usare i blush matte per un look leggero e sofisticato adatto a tutti i giorni, a cui sovrapporre la polvere iridescente per il perfetto glamour serale. Comunque Guipure è pigmentato abbastanza da essere utilizzato da solo, e dona una graziosa luminosità perfetta per la stagione calda. Tra l’altro le polveri opache non sono piatte e scialbe, ma il finish tende lievemente al satin, quindi l’effetto è fresco e naturale.

Come dicevo, alcuni dei colori ricordano dei blush visti in collezioni passate: Guipure assomiglia molto a Rose gold dalla linea permanente – mi ricorda inoltre Orgasm di NARS -, mentre Crochet è simile al blush in edizione limitata della collezione Avoir la peche collection, Pan Tao. Per quanto ne so Chantilly è una tonalità inedita.

La pigmentazione è fantastica come sempre e la texture è ottima, vellutata e semplice da sfumare. Le tonalità opache sono leggermente polverose – cercate di premere il pennello sulla polvere piuttosto che trascinarlo – mentre il blush shimmer ha una texture cremosa, i glitter sono un tutt’uno con la polvere, quindi l’effetto non è grossolano e non ci sono fall outs.

Il packaging è semplice ed essenziale ma comunque elegante: un compact di plastica nera, solida e resistente. Comprende anche uno specchio della larghezza della confezione, per cui è molto comodo per viaggiare o da tenere in borsetta per i ritocchi.
Ogni palette contiene 20g di prodotto – più o meno 6.5g per ciascuna cialda – al costo di 13€, mentre i blush singoli contengono 8g di prodotto e costano 7€. Come vedete le palette Blush by 3 sono estremamente convenienti, visto che si ricevono 3 blush quasi full size al prezzo di due.
Salva-spazio ed economico, si vince su tutti i fronti.

MAC eyeshadows: an overview and my favorites Part 2

In my recommendation post I tried to mention only permanent eyeshadows, and to consider only the best textures.

There are no blue eyeshadows simply because I rarely use them, nevertheless Aquadisiac and Fresh waters are really popular. Also I hate silver eyeshadows with all my heart, however Electra gets a lot of love. Dupes for pretty much all the matte browns can be found in the Naked palettes, so if you have those palettes just skip them.
Carbon used to be the blackest black, but I hear the new formula lacks in pigmentation. I bet you’ll be able to find a cheaper alternative if you need a matte black. Another thing to keep in mind is, aside for Cranberry and few exceptions - like Sushi flower -, MAC pinks are not that good in terms of texture and/or pigmentation. I think you can spend your money in better brands in this case.

For the life of me I couldn’t take a decent picture of Vanilla (3.) ‘cause it blends perfectly with my skin color. Anyways, Vanilla and Blanc type (2.) – and Brule as well – look pretty much the same: matte or almost matte highlighting shades, skin-like blending shades – perfect to help the blending process or to tone down shades in case you put to much on - or the perfect all over base for a vintage look. You just have to choose the texture you prefer.
Nylon (1.) is super frosty, too much for an all over wash, but a tiny bit in the inner corner opens the eyes like nothing else. Shroom (4.) gives a soft wash of transparent shimmer that looks lovely on brides or just to brighten a neutral look. Retrospect (5.) is a beautiful cool gold: is a lustre so it gives a frosty, glittery look.

I have a thing for greens: my favorite, Sweet & punchy (6.), was LE with the To the beach collection, but if you’re looking for a bright green I’d recommend Lucky green, finally permanent, or Juxt, if you want something a little lighter. Humid (7.) – forest green – is another must have if you like greens: it’s the perfect complement for an emerald smokey eye or looks gorgeous in the crease with a butter shade on the lid. Sumptuous olive (8.) is a gorgeous olive green with gold shimmer and a lovely soft texture – looks amazing on mature skins or on brown eyes -. If you like greens but you don’t feel so much daring, Greensmoke (9.) is a metallic-ish grey with green shimmer, perfect for a simple smokey eye.

Cranberry (12.) is another very popular shade: is a reddish plum with pink shimmer and a frost finish. It’s extremely pigmented and looks beautiful on green eyes. Trax (13.) belongs to the same color family but it’s definitely less pigmented. I use it to give a pink twist to a flat brown smokey eye or over a base to show the beautiful gold shimmer. Satellite dreams (10.) is my favorite purple: plum with violet and blue pearl shimmer. If you like more cool toned purples you can check Parfait amour. Shale (11.) is more on the mauve-ish side and gives a lovely wash of color with just the right amount of shimmer to make it interesting.

Vex (14.) and Club (15.) are duochrome eyeshadows: when the light hits them they change color. Vex is a light pearl grey with a hint of lavender undertones and frost shimmer that flashes pink or green according to the lighting. I tend to use it as a base for purple smokey eyes but looks beautiful on it own as a wash of color. Club is one of the most famous and copied MAC shades: it’s a reddish brown with green pearl. It’s quite multidimensional, like peacock feathers; sometimes it looks more teal, under other lighting appears more gunmetal, and blends into a warm chocolate brown, so is one of those color that can be used to achieve a complete look with no effort.

Copperplate (16.) is defined as a muted mid-tone grey, but I definitely see a warm undertone here. It’s a matte² so it’s amazing to work with. Print (17.) is a basic grey with a hint of shimmer; it may look boring but it’s one of my favorite shades for dark smokey looks. Smut (18.) is a dark concrete gray, almost black, with reddish shimmer and it’s a good alternative to black for softer looks.

These shades sit together in my brow palette. They’re all matte – well, Mystery and Cork are actually satin, but they look pretty much matte – since you don’t want shimmer in your eyebrows. With a little bit of mixing I can cover pretty much all brow colors. Omega (19.) suits perfectly blond brows. I use Cork (22.) and Charcoal brown (21.) on brunettes respectively with warm and neutral undertones, and Mystery (20.) on darker hair. Obviously I use them as normal eyeshadow as well with great results. With the exception of Cork that has a golden undertone, all these shades have cool taupe-ish undertones.

Samoa silk (23.) is a almost-matte peach shade that I tend to use in the crease to soften warm brown eyeshadows or all over the lid for a bonne mine effect. Amber lights (24.) – peachy-brown with shimmer – looks gorgeous on blue eyes and on tanned skin tones. It has one of the best textures in my opinion. Coppering (25.) is a bright orange copper, while Antiqued (26.) is an ash brown with bronze shimmer. All blended together give the most stunning orange-toned smokey eye look that I look forward to wear this upcoming summer. If you find orange shadow a little hard to wear, try breaking the warmth with a fine line of black eyeliner along the lash line.

Kid (27.) – beige cashmere - is a good blending shade. It’s slightly lighter than the more popular Wedge, but you don’t need them both since the difference is barely noticeable. Naked Lunch (28.) and All that glitters (29.) are two of those ‘my skin but better’ shades: Naked lunch is pinker, while All that glitters has orange undertones. They both give a soft wash of shimmer that opens the eyes and make them appear bigger. Era (30.) is a soft beige with shimmer and I use it in my everyday makeup when I’m in hurry ‘cause it gives a very elegant and subtle definition.

The gold and bronze family is the one I like and use the most: I find they suit a lot of different skin tones and eye colors in an easy-to-wear way. Woodwinked (31.) is a very metallic antique gold that blends into an orange-ish brown - so it’s another of those shadows that can be used alone to achieve a complete look -. It suits perfectly more tanned skins but I use it anyways, sometimes mixed with Patina to tone down the yellow tones. Romp (32.) and Tempting (34.) look very similar on the skin but look differently in the pan: both chocolate browns with golden undertones the first and a hint of copper the second. Bronze (33.) it’s exactly what the name says: the perfect bronze eyeshadow and it’s a frost so is very pigmented and metallic. I mix it with Romp and Club for a gorgeous, almost holographic, smokey eye for the evening.

Last but not least, my favorite shades. Espresso (35.) is a muted golden brown that can be paired with thousand shades and in many ways. Mulch (36.) is my eyeshadow of choice for an effortless brown smokey look: it’s a reddish brown with bronze shimmer. Sable (37.) it’s a golden plum with bronze pearl and looks beautiful in the crease with Naked lunch on the lid. Satin taupe (38.) and Patina (39.) are my favorite shades of the whole lot. Satin taupe is indeed a taupe-y shade with silver shimmer, while Patina it’s a taupe brown with golden pearl. I often mix them together or use them alone for effortless looks. They are the two shades I recommend to every MAC newbie that asks me for a must have that goes with everything.

Of course you don’t have to buy all these shades, but knowing the colors that you use more often you now have a list of the best performing shades MAC has to offer. Also you won’t end up with tons of dupes or similar shades.

Nella mia lista ho cercato di menzionare solo ombretti parte della collezione permanente, e di considerare solo le texture migliori. Non ci sono blu semplicemente perché non li uso quasi mai, ma in ogni caso Aquadisiac e Fresh waters sono molto popolari. Personalmente odio gli ombretti argento con tutto il cuore, ma Electra è tra i più venduti.
Carbon una volta era considerato il più nero dei neri, ma ho sentito che la nuova formulazione manca di pigmentazione. Sono convinta che riuscirete a trovare un nero opaco di una marca molto più economica. Un’altra cosa da tenere a mente è che a parte Cranberry ed un paio di altre eccezioni – Sushi flower, per esempio – i rosa di MAC non sono eccezionali in termini di texture e/o pigmentazione. In questo caso i vostri soldi sarebbero meglio spesi con altre marche.

Non riuscirei a fare una foto decente di Vanilla (3.) neppure se ne andasse della mia vita, visto che corrisponde perfettamente al mio colore di pelle. Comunque, Vanilla e Blanc type (2.) – così come Brule – si distinguono appena: tonalità matte o quasi opache perfette da usare come highlighter dell’artcata sopraccigliare, per facilitare la transizione nella sfumatura, oppure su tutta la palpebra come base per un look vintage. Non resta che scegliere la texture che preferite.
Nylon (1.) è molto metallico - troppo per usarlo su tutta la palpebra - ma una piccola quantità nell’angolo interno dell’occhio, apre ed illumina lo sguardo. Shroom (4.) sulle pelli più chiare appare come una passata di micro shimmer trasparente, che dona tantissimo alle spose oppure è perfetto per un look neutron. Retrospect (5.) è un bellissimo oro freddo: ha un finish lustre, quindi i glitter sono molto evidenti.

Adoro i verdi: il mio preferito, Sweet & punchy (6.), era limited edition con la To the beach collection, ma, se siete in cerca di un verde brillante, raccomando Lucky green - finalmente permanente - o Juxt, che è un po’ più chiaro. Humid (7.) – verde bosco – è un altro must have se vi piacciono i verdi: è il complemento perfetto ad uno smokey nei toni smeraldo oppure è bellissimo sfumato nella piega con un color burro sulla palpebra mobile. Sumptuous olive (8.) è uno stupendo verde olive con un tocco di oro ed una texture morbida e facile da sfumare – è fantastico sulle pelli mature e con gli occhi nocciola -. Se amate il verde ma non volete osare troppo, Greensmoke (9.) è un grigio metallizzato con sfumature verdi, perfetto per uno smokey semplice e veloce.

Cranberry (13.) è un’altro ombretto molto popolare: è un prugna rossiccio con shimmer rosato. E’ estremamente pigmentato e dona tantissimo a chi ha gli occhi verdi. Trax (14.) appartiene alla stessa famiglia ma è decisamente meno pigmentato. Lo utilizzo per aggiungere un pizzico di rosa ad un look piatto oppure con una base per mostrare i bellissimi glitter oro. Satellite dreams (11.) è il mio viola preferito: prugna con iridescenza viola e turchese. Se preferite toni più freddi date un’occhiata a Parfait amour. Shale (12.) tende al malva, con la giusta quantità di shimmer che lo rende interessante ed è delizioso per un look discreto da tutti i giorni.

Vex (14.) e Club (15.) sono duochrome: a seconda della luce possono apparire di un colore oppure di un altro. Vex è un grigio perla chiaro con sottotoni lavanda e micro glitter che sembrano verdi o rosa, a seconda della luce. Di solito lo uso come base per gli smokey viola ma è bellissimo anche da solo, steso su tutta la palpebra. Club è uno degli eyeshadow più famosi ed anche tra i più copiati: è un marrone rossiccio con iridescenza verde. E’ molto multidimensionale, come le piume di pavone; a volte tende all’ottanio, sotto altre luci sembra bronzo, e sfumato appare come un cioccolato dai toni caldi, quindi si può utilizzare per un look complesso ma semplicissimo.

MAC definisce Copperplate (16.) come un grigio tenue, ma io ci vedo decisamente un sottotono caldo. E’ un matte², quindi la texture è meravigliosa. Print (17.) è un tipico grigio con l’aggiunta di micro shimmer; può sembrare un colore noioso, ma è uno dei miei preferiti da usare come transizione nei trucchi più scuri. Smut (18.) è un grigio asfalto scuro, quasi nero, con piccoli glitter tendenti al rosso ed è una buona alternativa al nero per un makeup più soft.

Tengo questi colori in una palette a parte che utilizzo principalmente per le sopracciglia. Sono quasi tutti matte - Mystery e Cork sono satin, ma l’effetto finale è quasi opaco – dato che usare un ombretto con glitter per definire le sopracciglia non è mai una buona idea. Omega (19.) è il più adatto alle sopracciglia bionde o castano chiaro. Utilizzo Cork (22.) e Charcoal brown (21.) rispettivamente sulle castane dai toni caldi e neutri, e Mystery (20.) sulle more. Ovviamente si possono utilizzare come ombretti normali, vista l’ottima texture e pigmentazione. Con l’eccezione di Cork che ha dei sottotoni dorati, sono tutte gradazioni di talpa dai toni freddi.

Samoa silk (23.) è un pesca quasi matte che tendo ad usare il più delle volte per sfumare verso l’arcata sopraccigliare gli ombretti marroni dai toni caldi o su tutta la palpebra per un trucco bonne mine. Amber lights (24.) – pesca metallizzato – dona tantissimo alle ragazze con gli occhi azzurri ed abbronzate. Ha una delle texture migliori in assoluto. Coppering (25.) è un rame aranciato brillante, mentre Antiqued (26.) è un marrone freddo con shimmer color bronzo. Tutt insieme creano un trucco nei toni arancio perfetto per la prossima estate. Se trovate difficile indossare gli ombretti arancioni, provate a spezzare con l’eyeliner nero.

Kid (27.) – cashmere – è uno di quei colori che si possono utilizzare per facilitare la sfumatura. E’ leggermente più chiaro del più famoso Wedge, ma, visto che la differenza si nota appena, non serve averli entrambi. Naked Lunch (28.) ed All that glitters (29.) sono due di quei colori ‘come la mia pelle ma meglio’: Naked lunch è più rosa, All that glitters più aranciato. Applicati su tutta la palpebra aprono l’occhio e lo fanno sembrare più grande. Era (30.) è un beige delicato con iridescenza neutra; è l’ombretto che uso più spesso quando ho poco tempo a disposizione ed ho bisogno di una leggera definizione, comunque molto elegante e discreta.

La famiglia degli ori e bronzi è quella che amo ed utilizzo di più: trovo che donino alle diverse carnagioni ed ai vari colori di iride e siano molto semplici da portare di giorno ed in varie situazioni. Woodwinked (31.) è un oro antico metallizzato che quando sfumato si trasforma in un marrone aranciato – per cui è un altro di quei colori che si possono utilizzare da soli per un trucco completo -. Dona tantissimo alle pelli olivastre ed abbronzate, ma amo indossarlo anche io, nonostante il pallore, magari attenuando il sottotono giallo con un pizzico di Patina. Romp (32.) e Tempting (34.) appaiono molto simili sulla pelle anche se le cialde sembrano diverse: sono entrambi color cioccolato, con sottotono dorato il primo, con un tono ramato il secondo. Bronze (33.) è l’ombretto color bronzo per antonomasia ed essendo un frost è molto metallico e pigmentato. Per un perfetto look da sera mischio Romp, Club e Bronze, ottenendo uno smokey quasi olografico per cui ricevo sempre tantissimi complimenti.

Ultime ma non meno importanti, le mie tonalità preferite. Espresso (35.) è un marrone dorato tenue dal finish matte che si può utilizzare insieme a tantissime tonalità diverse ed ha molteplici usi. Mulch (36.) è l’ombretto che utilizzo più spesso quando ho voglia di uno smokey eye veloce nei toni del marrone: è un marrone rossiccio con shimmer color bronzo. Sable (37.) è un prugna dorato con un finish perlato color bronzo ed è delizioso nella piega con Naked lunch sulla palpebra mobile. Satin taupe (38.) e Patina (39.) sono i miei preferiti in assoluto. Satin taupe è un talpa con pagliuzze argentate, mentre Patina è un talpa chiaro con base marrone ed effetto perlato color oro. Spesso li mischio per un look veloce. Sono i due ombretti che raccomando a chiunque mi chieda un consiglio su un must have di MAC che vada con tutto.

Naturalmente non dovete assolutamente acquistare tutte queste tonalità – ricordo che come lavoro part time per pagarmi le tasse universitarie, faccio la truccatrice freelance e pago per i miei prodotti con i soldi che guadagno – ma sapendo che colori vi piacciono e di quali tonalità avete bisogno, ora avete una lista di quelli che secondo me sono i migliori ombretti di MAC. In più non dovreste rischiare di acquistare per errore colori troppo simili.
