MAC eyeshadows: an overview and my favorites Part 1

Shopping at MAC can be a little overwhelming, especially if it’s the first time. There’s so much choice and a bunch of pretty things that you feel compelled to try at least one product per type – or if you’re like me, a thousand -. Since the Italian e-shop is finally becoming a reality I thought to seize the opportunity to show you my favorite products and give you my recommendations about the must haves.
I thought to start with my favorite eyeshadows.

MAC pressed eyeshadows come in 2 shapes: the pro pan – the cheaper option: you only get the the pressed powder in the metal pan with a magnet; these eyeshadows require a magnetic palette, that can also be bought at MAC in the 4 pans and 15 pans option or you can also use other brands, like Z palettes and UNII – and the potted version – in the standard black plastic packaging -. Limited edition shades only come in the potted version, and special eyeshadows like Mega Metal and Mineralize shadows come in bigger sizes. There are also loose powders, the pigments, but since they’re more than mere eyeshadows, I’ll talk about those in a different post.
The pro pan version is only available online and in stores, MAC counters only sell the potted version.

Also, they come in 8 different finishes:
matte – the pure color; no shimmer, no sparkle. Like Carbon or Espresso.
matte² – same as matte but the texture is slightly more pigmented, softer and smoother. Blanc type and Copperplate are my favorites.
frost – small glitter particles that give an overall shine. Like Patina, Naked lunch and Satin taupe.
satin – silky finish, a sheen rather than a shine. Like Club and Shroom.
veluxe pearl – smooth and soft metallic finish, with a hint of pearl shine. Like All that glitters and Woodwinked.
lustre – an intense frosty look. Like Retrospect and Tempting. Some, like Filament, look extremely pretty in the pan but are a mess to work with in terms of fall outs.
veluxe – similar in texture to the veluxe pearl, but less metallic and more on the matte side. Like Samoa silk.
velvet – Soft, almost creamy texture. Like Vanilla, Mulch and Sketch. Some appear muted and less pigmented than you’d expect from the look in the pan.

You see I keep all my MAC eyeshadows in palettes: when the collection starts to grow it gets more practical, especially if you are a makeup artist. I keep my everyday eyeshadows in a 15 pan palette that now holds 26, since I popped out the plastic grill.

The first eyeshadows I bought a couple of years ago were Yogurt, Espresso, Cranberry and Carbon, because I had a specific look in mind for Christmas, but if I had to restart my collection I’d pick Satin Taupe, Patina, Vanilla or Shroom and something to put in the crease, probably Espresso or Cork, but matte browns are easily dupable, especially if you own the Naked palettes by Urban decay. Club is a nice alternative if you want something a little different.

Comprare da MAC può confondere un pochino, soprattutto se è la prima volta. C’è così tanta scelta e così tanti prodotti nuovi e tonalità graziose che resistere diventa impossibile e l’impulso di provare uno di tutto – oppure mille, se siete come me – diventa irrefrenabile. Vista la prossima apertura dell’e-shop italiano, ho pensato di cogliere l’opportunità e mostrarvi i miei prodotti preferiti e darvi le mie raccomandazioni circa i must haves.
Ho pensato di iniziare con gli ombretti.

Gli eyeshadow pressati di MAC sono disponibili in 2 formati: il pro pan – la variante più economica (12.50€): si tratta della cialda nella base di metallo con un magnete; questi ombretti necessitano di una palette magnetica, che può essere acquistata sempre da MAC, nel formato da 4 o 15 cialde, oppure potete usare altre marche, come Z palette o UNII – e la versione confezionata (16.50€) – nel packaging standard di plastica nera con coperchio -. Le tonalità limited edition sono disponibili solo nel formato confezionato, e ombretti speciali come Mega metal e quelli minerali hanno dimensioni e costi maggiori. Esiste anche una versione a polvere libera, i pigmenti, ma siccome non si tratta di meri ombretti ne parlerò in un post specifico.
I pro pan sono disponibili solo online e negli store; i counters vendono solo la versione standard.

Inoltre esistono 8 tipi di texture:
matte – il colore in purezza, senza shimmer o brillantini; come Carbon ed Espresso.
matte² – come i matte ma con una texture più soffice ed ancora più pigmentati. Blanc type e Copperplate sono i miei preferiti.
frost – con finissimi glitter che donano una brillantezza diffusa. Come Patina, Naked lunch e Satin taupe.
satin – un finish setoso, luminoso più che brillante. Come Club e Shroom.veluxe pearl – un morbido finish metallico, con una punta di luminosità perlata. Come All that glitters e Woodwinked.
lustre – un intenso finish glitterato. Come Retrospect e Tempting. Alcuni, come Filament, sembrano bellissimi nella cialda ma sono tremendi in termini di fall outs – polvere che cade sulle guance -.
veluxe – simili in texture ai veluxe pearl, ma meno metallici e più vicini ad un finish matte. Come Samoa silk.
velvet – texture morbida, quasi cremosa. Come Vanilla, Mulch e Sketch. Alcuni sembrano meno pigmentati di quello che si potrebbe pensare a vederli nel pan.

Come potete vedere tengo tutti i miei ombretti in palette: quando la collezione comincia a crescere, o se si lavora come truccatori, questa soluzione è infinitamente più pratica. I colori che uso di più si trovano in una palette da 15 che ora ne può contenere 26 perché ho rimosso la griglia – è sufficiente inserire con attenzione una spatola oppure una lama nella fessura della chiusura ed il gioco è fatto -.

Quelli nella foto sono i miei preferiti, quelli che uso più spesso e quelli con la texture migliore.

I primi colori che ho acquistato un paio di anni fa sono Espresso, Cranberry e Carbon, perchè avevo in mente un trucco specifico per Natale, ma ora come ora, se dovessi ricominciare la collezione da capo acquisterei per primi Satin Taupe, Patina, Vanilla oppure Shroom e qualcosa da mettere nella piega come Espresso oppure Cork, ma i marroni matte sono facilmente sostituibili, soprattutto se avete già le palette Naked di Urban decay. Club è una buona opzione per look più particolari.
