Louise Young starter kit

I don’t know if it happens to everyone, but every time I stumble on a new brand I feel a little overwhelmed by the amount of products and shades available and since browsing the internet looking for reviews for every single product can be a little time consuming, I often end up stuffing blindly my cart with all the things that catch my eye. That’s the reason why I always found ‘starter kit’ videos/posts very useful: the brand’s top products get highlighted, picking a couple of must haves becomes very easy and in the end you don’t find yourself surrounded by meh products.

I thought about starting with a brand that doesn’t get enough love in my opinion.
Louise Young is a British makeup artist best known in the makeup world for her amazing makeup brushes, aside obviously for her remarkable skills – you can see her in action on her YouTube channel here.
I rummaged in my kit to pick out my most reached brushes along with the eyeshadow palette that has been a life savior in many occasions and I put together a ‘must have’ kit.

The Essential eyeshadow palette contains 5 matte eyeshadows, all very creamy and pigmented. They can be used also as eyeliners and, being matte and mostly cool toned, are perfect to fill in the brows. The whole palette is also a must have for all the vintage makeup lovers, just take a look at the video tutorials and you’ll see. Comes with a mirror and pretty decent travel-size brush that kicks all the other silly ‘palette-included’ applicators in the teeth.

The LY02 is a flat foundation brush with soft taklon fibers. Is almost twice the size of a normal foundation brush and, as stated on the website, makes the application of cream and liquid products quick and easy. The LY34, the Super foundation, is a unique shaped synthetic brush that can be used with all kind of products, from liquid to powders, and delivers a flawless finish. No wonder it’s the best selling brush.
The Super fan, LY20, can be used to highlight, contour and to apply or knock off excess setting powder. Every kit needs a fan brush, believe me, you never know when you’re going to need one.

The LY16 is a small detail eyeshadow brush with sable fibers. I use to fill my brows for a natural effect - when I don’t want that severe geometric shape that you can get with angled brushes -, for detailed eyeshadow application on the lower lash line and as a lip brush. A real multitasker. The Fine eyeliner LY24 allows you to draw the finest line imaginable with gel eyeliners. Best eyeliner brush ever. I use the LY08 for detail concealer application and the LY19 to apply cream eyeshadows, primers or concealer on bigger areas. The LY38 (with the smaller versions 38A and B) is an improved version of the MAC 226 and it allows precise application in the crease.

These are not basic brushes you can’t live without but definitely brushes that you want to check if you’re a makeup artist or enjoy more complex advanced looks. There are plenty equally good basic brushes on the website, just not as unique as these ones I just showed you. I recommend taking a look to the pencil brushes too - they come in different sizes for different eye shapes -.
And if you’re on a budget and can only pick a couple, definitely go for the LY34, the LY24 and the LY38.

Non so se succeda a tutti, ma ogni volta che mi imbatto in un nuovo brand mi sento un po’ sopraffatta dal numero di prodotti e tonalità disponibili e dato che cercare su google le recensioni di ogni prodotto è un po’ dispersivo, finisco sempre col riempire il carrello con tutto ciò che mi colpisce. Questo è il motivo per cui ho sempre apprezzato i video/post sugli starter kit: i prodotti migliori del marchio sono messi in evidenza, è più semplice scegliere un paio di cose da avere assolutamente e alla fine non ti trovi circondato da prodotti così così.

Ho pensato di iniziare con un brand poco conosciuto in Italia che merita più menzioni.
Louise Young è una truccatrice inglese nota soprattutto per la sua linea di favolosi pennelli, oltre ovviamente al suo eccezionale talento – potete vederla all’opera su YouTube qui.
Ho frugato nel mio kit alla ricerca dei suoi pennelli che uso più di frequente e ovviamente la palette di ombretti che mi ha già salvato in diverse occasioni ed ho creato un kit di must haves del marchio.

La palette di ombretti Essential contiene 5 polveri matte, molto pigmentate e dalla texture cremosa. Possono essere utilizzate anche come eyeliners e, essendo matte e per la maggior parte a base fredda, per riempire le sopracciglia. E’ inoltre un must have per tutte le amanti del makeup vintage, semplicemente guardate i video tutorial e vedrete. Contiene inoltre uno specchio e un pennellino applicatore che copre di vergogna quei ridicoli applicatori che di solito si trovano nelle palette.

Il LY02 è un pennello piatto per il fondotinta con setole di morbido taklon. E’ grande quasi il doppio di un normale pennello piatto e, come dicono sul sito, l’applicazione di liquidi e creme è più veloce e semplice. Il LY34, il Super foundation, è un pennello sintetico dalla forma unica in grado di applicare polveri, liquidi e creme alla perfezione. Non c’è da stupirsi che sia il più venduto. Il Super fan, LY20, può essere usato per l’highlighter, il contouring e applicare o rimuovere la polvere in eccesso. Ogni kit dovrebbe contenere un pennello a ventaglio, non si può mai sapere quando servirà.

Il LY16 è un pennello con setole di zibellino per i dettagli. Lo utilizzo per riempire le sopracciglia in modo naturale – quando voglio evitare le geometrie più severe che si ottengono con il pennello angolato -, per applicare l’ombretto sulla palpebra inferiore o per applicare il rossetto. Un vero multitasker. Il Fine liner LY24 consente di creare la linea più sottile possibile con l’eyeliner in gel. E’ il migliore pennello di sempre per questo scopo. Uso il LY08 per correggere le imperfezioni più piccole e il LY19 per applicare ombretti in crema, primer e correttore in zone più ampie. Il LY38 (insieme alle versioni più piccole 38A e B) è una versione perfezionata del 226 di MAC ed applica l’ombretto con precisione assoluta nella piega.

Questi non sono pennelli assolutamente necessari ma sicuramente potrebbero interessarvi se siete makeup artist o se vi destreggiate con look più avanzati. Sul sito ci sono tantissimi pennelli base della medesima qualità, solo non così diversi dal solito come quelli che vi ho mostrato. Date anche un’occhiata ai pencil brush – ce ne sono di diverse dimensioni per occhi grandi e piccoli. E se volete spendere poco e potete acquistarne solo un paio, consiglio LY34, LY24 e LY38.
