YSL Glossy stain #17 review & swatches

When it comes to lip products there’s always something that it’s not quite right: with good lasting power usually comes dryness or matte finish; with moisture comes lack of pigmentation and fast fading; glossy finish gets along with stickiness; stain means dehydration and discomfort.
Well, thanks to Yves Saint Laurent, not anymore.

The new Rouge pur couture Vernis à lèvres Glossy stains – quite a mouth filler, uh? – come in 17 shades, from natural and nude to bold, and are the perfect hybrid between a gloss, a lipstick and a stain. One coat gives a glossy finish with a little bit of color, like a rather pigmented gloss – I’m thinking about some of the Cremesheens by MAC -. Two or more coats give the intensity of a lipstick with glossy finish. When the gloss wears off, it shows a still-shiny stain that promises to last all day.

The packaging feels heavy and luxurious, even if I personally find it a little too severe: black square-based vial with see-through band - that shows both the shade and the amount of left-over product – and gold screw on cap with the brand logo in red.
The Glossy stains come with a special doe foot applicator - flat and pointy, and also very flexible -, that allows perfect application and control even on the lip line or the Cupid’s bow.
The applicator has enough give and it’s quite easy to scrape the sides of the vial, so no waste of product in sight.

The scent is the usual amazing, rose-y scent that all YSL lip products have, that reminds me a lot of Parisiènne eau de toilette. It lingers on the lips for a while, then it starts to softly fade after a couple of hours.

The texture is different from anything else I’ve ever tried: it’s light and thin and it doesn’t feel sticky at all. It’s actually quite comfortable to wear, moisturizing in a way, and lacks of all the unpleasant features of a stain, especially the slight stretch and the awful dryness that makes every little dry patch look ten times worse. The product doesn’t move towards fine lines or collect into the creases like too creamy glosses often do.
The gloss lasts 3 to 4 hours without eating and drinking carefully, then it gently wears off to reveal the stain underneath.
The stain it’s not completely matte and is pretty much everlasting with a little bit of fading in the middle of the lips.

Encre rose is a blue-toned light fuchsia pink. It’s not the most pigmented between the 17 shades, but I can get full coverage with two generous coats. It’s easily buildable, without looking gloopy or tacky.

YSL Glossy stains retail for 27.50€/22.50£/32$ for 0.20 oz/6 ml and can be found online and in stores, at Sephora’s and every YSL suppliers, but keep in mind that some shades are exclusive to Sephora or some retailers like Nordstrom.

If you can afford the splurge, these are totally worthy: if I could buy only one product from the spring collections it would be one of these stains, that’s how good they are.

L’argomento rossetti è sempre un po’ difficile, perchè è quasi impossibile accontentare tutti: se un prodotto è a lunga tenuta di solito è anche matte e disidratante; i prodotti più idratanti mancano di pigmentazione e di durata; i gloss sono appiccicosi; gli stain vanno a braccetto con secchezza e fastidio.
Bè, grazie a Yves Saint Laurent, non più.

I nuovi Rouge pur couture vernis à lèvres Glossy stain – un nome che riempie la bocca, eh? – si declinano in 17 tonalità, dai colori tenui ed ad effetto nudo alle nuance più scure e vamp, e sono l’ibrido perfetto tra un rossetto, un gloss ed uno stain. Una passata dona un colore leggero e trasparente, tipico di quei gloss abbastanza pigmentati – e sto pensando, per esempio, ad alcuni dei Cremesheen di MAC -. Due o più strati garantiscono la coprenza di un rossetto effetto lucido. Quando il gloss scompare, si scopre lo stain sottostante, che promette di durare tutto il giorno.

Il packaging è pesante e lussuoso, anche se a mio parere un po’ troppo severo: una fiala nera lucida a base quadrata con una striscia trasparente – che lascia intravedere la tonalità e la quantità di prodotto residuo –, e tappo a vite dorato con il monogramma del marchio in rosso.
I Glossy stain sono dotati di un applicatore a spugnetta particolare - piatto ed appuntito, e piuttosto flessibile – che permette il massimo controllo ed un’elevata precisione anche nei punti più difficili, come il contorno labbra e l’arco di Cupido.
L’applicatore è sufficientemente flessibile da poter prelevare il prodotto anche sulle pareti della fiala, quindi non dovrebbero esserci sprechi.

La profumazione è la solita, deliziosa fragranza di rose tipica di tutti i prodotti per le labbra di YSL, che mi ricorda il profumo Parisienne. E’ abbastanza persistente e dopo un paio d’ore comincia a svanire dolcemente.

La texture è diversa da qualunque consistenza abbia mai provato: è leggera, quasi come un gel, ed assolutamente non appiccicosa. In realtà è molto confortevole da indossare, quasi idratante, e manca di tutte le fastidiose caratteristiche tipiche degli ‘inchiostri’ per labbra, come la sensazione di stiramento della pelle e la secchezza che accentua le pellicine facendole sembrare dieci volte peggio. Il prodotto non cola nè si accumula nelle pieghe come succede con le texture più cremose.
L’effetto lucido dura dalle 3 alle 4 ore, senza mangiare e bevendo con attenzione, dopo di chè svanisce lentamente rivelando lo stain sottostante.
Lo stain conserva comunque un po’ di brillantezza e dura pressochè tutto il giorno, con uno sbiadimento più accentuato al centro delle labbra – ma senza l’effetto ‘matita non sfumata’ -.

Encre rose è un fuchsia chiaro con base blu. Non è la più pigmentata tra le 17 tonalità, ma la coprenza opaca si può ottenere facilmente con due applicazioni generose. La coprenza si può modulare senza problemi e soprattutto senza ottenere quell’orrido effetto appiccicoso e pacchiano da prodotto in eccesso.

I Glossy stain di YSL costano 27.50€ per 0.20 oz/6 ml e potete trovarli online e nei negozi, presso Sephora e tutti gli altri rivenditori YSL. Negli USA ed in Inghilterra alcune tonalità sono un’esclusiva di Sephora o di alcuni rivenditori, ma non so dire se le limitazioni si presentino anche da noi.

Se potete permettervi la spesa, ne vale assolutamente la pena: se potessi comprare solo uno dei prodotti delle collezioni primaverili sarebbe senz’altro uno di questi glossy stain, e questo la dice lunga sulla validità del prodotto.
