If it looks familiar, it’s because it was previously released as part of a SE brush set in the Ice Parade 2011 Holiday collection in the usual short handle version.
MAC describes the 286 as a soft dome shaped, two-toned duo-fibre brush of goat and synthetic fibres that provides a sheer, more controlled application of M·A·C Mineralize Eye Shadow. To me it looks like the perfect hybrid between the 222 and the 226: resilient fibres and pointy shape with the softness and the amazing application skills of the other duo fibres.

First of all I used it to apply mineral eyeshadow all over the lid: the effect is lovely, sheerer but uniform; also the finish was less glittery and more metallic, but there where some fall outs I don’t usually get with a flat brush like the 239. I tried to use it to put color in the crease, but the amount of product it applies is so small that this usage isn’t very convenient unless you’re going for something extremely precise.
Then I tried it as blending blush and the angels sang: this guy here blends like there’s no tomorrow. Blending was so fast and effortless I was seriously taken aback. It’s even better than the 224 in a way, because the bristles don’t fan out so much and it blends with surgical precision.I finally used the 286 to buff concealer and it was another hit: precise, flawless application and no shedding at all. I’m already considering purchasing a dupe, so I can keep one for concealer and one for eyeshadow.
Dimension wise, the 286 is shorter than the other blending brushes – same size of the 266 – and the bristles are same length as the 224 ones, but way denser. 
The packaging is a little different than usual: instead of the typical open plastic sleeve, this brush comes in a closed wrapper and with one of those little plastic tubes to protect the bristles, and this is definitely a plus: MAC brushes are so expensive I always felt a little annoyed by the shabby packaging.It’s part of the Naturally collection that hit Italian stores and counters on February 1st, as far as I know is permanent and it retails for 35.50€/22£/36.50$.
I may have found a cheaper dupe already, but it’s still on its way to me. I’ll keep you posted.

Come ormai saprete, sono un’avida collezionista di pennelli e dal momento in cui ho scoperto che MAC ne avrebbe messo in vendita uno nuovo ho cominciato a saltellare sul posto dall’eccitazione.

A me sembra la perfetta via di mezzo tra i pennelli 226 e 222: fibre solide che mantengono il loro aspetto e forma appuntita con la straordinaria morbidezza e doti applicative degli altri pennelli a fibra mista.

Prima di tutto ho seguito la raccomandazione di MAC e l’ho usato per applicare l’ombretto minerale su tutta la palpebra mobile: l’effetto è delizioso, delicato ma uniforme; ed il finish è più metallico e meno glitterato, ma un po’ di polvere mi è caduta sulle guance, cosa che di solito non succede con un pennello piatto come il 239. Ho provato anche ad applicare colore solo nella piega, ma la quantità di ombretto prelevato è talmente minima che non vale veramente la pena, a meno che non stiate cercando di applicare il colore con precisione estrema.
Quando l’ho usato per sfumare gli angeli hanno cantato: sfuma come se non ci fosse un domani. La sfumatura è stata così rapida e semplice da lasciarmi interdetta. In un certo senso è addirittura meglio del 224, perché le setole non si aprono così tanto a contatto con la pelle e si può sfumare con precisione chirurgica. Infine ho utilizzato il 286 per applicare il correttore ed è stato un altro successo: preciso, applica senza difetti e nessuna perdita di setole. Sto già pensando di comprarne un altro, così da averne uno per sfumare ed uno per il correttore.
Parlando di dimensioni, il 286 è più corto degli altri pennelli per sfumare - la stessa lunghezza del 266 - e le setole sono lunghe quanto quelle del 224, ma più dense.
Il packaging è diverso dal solito: invece della tipica bustina di plastica aperta, questo pennello è venduto in busta chiusa e con uno di quei tubetti di plastica che proteggono le setole, il che è decisamente un plus: i pennelli di MAC sono abbastanza costosi e il packaging trascurato mi ha sepre dato un po’ fastidio.
Fa parte della collezione Naturally che è uscita il 1 febbraio in Italia, per quanto ne so dovrebbe essere permanente e costa 35.50€.
Potrei aver trovato un dupe – un pennello molto simile ma più economico -, ma è ancora in viaggio. Vi terrò informati.
