MAC Mineralize spf15 foundation loose review

Since I enjoyed the Laura Mercier Mineral powder so much, I decided to give a try to MAC’s new arrival too: for Spring 2012 MAC reformulated an old base, the Mineralize foundation loose – and thank god, because the old packaging was simply absurd –, also adding a couple of new shades, and created a brand new line of concealers to go with it.

As usual it can be used both as foundation and as setting powder.
At first the coverage was a little tricky: it’s buildable but you need the right brush. The Illamasqua blush brush for instance is to fluffy and doesn’t work well with it, but using a 109 or a Sigma F82 round top kabuki I was able to build it till a medium coverage – even if I think you need to use more product than you would with the LM foundation -.

It has a natural satin finish that leaves the skin glowy and smooth. With the usual tin layer of primer to smooth any dry patch on my skin, it lasts 8-9 hours, then some oils start to break through around my nose, but nothing that can’t be fixed with blotting paper.

Unlike with the LM one, with this foundation you have to stick to the cream-before-powder rule and apply your blemish concealer before, otherwise is going to look cakey, since creams don’t slide easily on this. For the same reason I’d stick with powder highlighters and blushes, unless you want to apply creams and stains before you apply the mineral powder.

The packaging is lovely, sleek and sturdy. It comes with a gummy/velvety screw-on lid – it feels very NARS like, but just like all NARS packaging it gets dirty in a matter of seconds – and a sifter that unfortunately can’t be closed so is more likely to get messy – I kept the adhesive lid but you may want to put a round sponge or a puff to block the powder -. You get a good amount of product - 9.5g/0.33 oz – so is going to last for a while.

It has an everyday spf15 protection, is talc free and helps skin stay healthy and nourished.

Compared to the previous version the shade selection was improved: there’re 9 shades, all neutral based to go with every skin tone, included a very light one for very pale skin tones. I wear Light, a perfect match for my NC10.

I also had the chance to try the Mineral Concealers that came out along with the foundation and I thought I’d share. It’s a liquid concealer that comes in a vial like the Select moisture cover one but with a tiny brush instead of the doe foot applicator. The consistency feels smooth and easy to work with, light weight like the Select moisture cover but with the coverage of a creamy concealer. It doesn’t move or set into fine lines – and I didn’t set it with powder, so I’m impressed -. The color range is the usual one, with NCs and NWs shades. I had a small sample but I really liked the NW shade for under the eyes: good coverage without creasing; in general I’m not crazy for using liquid concealers to cover blemishes – I don’t find them precise enough, just not like creams – but it does its job. I think I’m going to stick with my beloved Studio finish concealer for now, but I might give a shot to the NW shade for summer.

The foundation retails for 33€/£23/36.50$ and the concealer for 19€/16£/22.50$, they’re both permanent and can be found on counters or online on your national MAC cosmetics website.

To sum up, it’s a very good foundation, but not as good as the Laura Mercier mineral powder – because of the packaging, the coverage, the cream issue and the lasting power -; on the other hand it’s easier to find than the LM one, especially here in Italy, and is a pretty good dupe.

Dato che il Mineral powder di Laura Mercier mi è piaciuto così tanto, ho deciso di testare anche il nuovo arrivato in casa MAC: per la primavera 2012 MAC ha riformulato una delle sue basi più datate, il Mineralize spf15 foundation loose – e grazie al cielo, perchè il vecchio packaging era semplicemente assurdo –, aggiungendo tra l’altro un altro paio di colori alla gamma pre-esistente, e creando una nuova liena di correttori in abbinamento.

Come sempre si può usare come fondotinta o come polvere fissante.
All’inizio la coprenza è stata un po’ problematica: si può costruire ma serve il pennello giusto. Il pennello per il blush di Illamasqua non è abbastanza denso e non sono riuscita a lavorare il fondontinta nel modo corretto, ma utilizzando il 109 o il kabuki Sigma F82 a punta arrotondata sono riuscita ad ottenere la coprenza media promessa – anche se ho dovuto utilizzare più prodotto di quanto avrei fatto con il fondotinta LM -.

Ha un finish naturale e satinato che lascia la pelle luminosa e liscia. Con il solito sottile strato di primer per rimediare ad ogni eventuale disquamazione e secchezza, dura 10-11 ore, dopodichè inizio a vedere un po’ di lucidità sul naso, ma niente a cui non si possa rimediare con dei foglietti assorbenti.

All’opposto di quanto succedeva con la polvere di LM, con questo fondotinta è necessario attenersi alla regola creme-prima-delle-polveri ed applicare il correttore sulle imperfezioni prima della base, altrimenti si otterrà l’effetto ‘makeup in eccesso’, visto che le creme fanno fatica a scivolare. Allo stesso modo mi limiterei a illuminanti e blush in polvere, a meno che non si applichino creme e stain prima della polvere minerale.

La confezione è molto graziosa, solida ed elegante. Il tappo a vite è dello stesso materiale gommoso e vellutato al tatto dei prodotti NARS – e come succede al makeup NARS attira polvere e ditate come se non ci fosse un domani – e l’erogatore a forellini non si può chiudere quindi è facile che la polvere finisca d’appertutto – io ho tenuto l’adesivo che sigillava i fori, ma magari si potrebbero utilizzare una spugna rotonda o un puff per bloccare la polvere -. Contiene 9.5g di prodotto, quindi durerà per un po’.

Ha un spf15 perfetto per tutti i giorni, non contiene talco ed aiuta la pelle a restare sana ed idratata.

Rispetto alla versione precedente la gamma di colori è stata implementata: ci sono 9 tonalità, tutte a base neutra per adattarsi ad ogni pelle, compresa una tonalità molto chiara per i coloriti più pallidi. Io indosso Light, un match perfetto per il mio NC10.

Ho anche potuto testare i Mineral Concealers presentati nella stessa collezione del fondotinta ed ho pensato di fare una brevissima recensione anche di quelli. Si tratta di un correttore liquido contenuto in una fiala come il Select moisture cover ma con un pennellino invece dell’applicatore a spugnetta. La consistenza è cremosa e facile da stendere, leggera come il Select moisture cover ma con la stessa coprenza di un correttore in crema. Non si sposta né si accumula nelle linee di espressione – e non l’avevo fissato con una polvere, quindi sono colpita -. I colori disponibili sono i soliti, con tonalità calde NW e fredde NC. Avevo un piccolo sample, ma mi è veramente piaciuta la tonalità NW per correggere le occhiaie: buona coprenza e durata senza accumuli nelle pieghe; in generale non amo usare correttori liquidi per correggere le imperfezioni – non mi danno la stessa precisione delle creme – ma anche la tonalità NC assolve il suo compito. Credo che continuerò ad usare il mio amato Studio finish, ma potrei prendere in considerazione le tonalità NW per quest’estate.

Il fondotinta costa 34.50€ e il correttore 20€, sono entrambi permanenti e possono essere acquistati presso i counter MAC e negli store.

Tirando le somme, è un buon fondotinta, anche se non all’altezza del Mineral powder di Laura Mercier – per via del packaging, la coprenza, il problema con le texture cremose e la durata -; d’altro canto è più facile da reperire di quello di LM, soprattutto qui in Italia, ed è un buon compromesso.
